CHAPTER 04 // GULU, UGANDA
TOGETHER by THEMOIRè is a series of projects to create a strengthening dialogue between unique artisans around the world and the values of the brand. THEMOIRè carries out projects to enhance the craftsmanship of a community in situations of vulnerability to preserve the traditions and to tell their own stories through pictures.
The final aim is to transform their heritage into products that allow us to finance projects in support of that community, generating positive change for people and our planet.
the latest chapter of its ongoing project that blends craftsmanship and shared visions with local communities.
This chapter was developed in Gulu, Northern Uganda, where THEMOIRè collaborated with Wawoko Kacel, an atelier of women artisans from vulnerable backgrounds. The initiative was made possible with the support of the associations Good Samaritan and To.Get.There, both active in the region with projects ranging from education and healthcare to support for at-risk youth.
During our journey, we witnessed firsthand the real impact these associations have on the local population. It was an important moment of exchange and growth, said Francesca Monaco, Co-founder and Communications Director of THEMOIRè.
One of the goals of TOGETHER by THEMOIRè is to create a genuine artistic exchange. When the local artisans saw their work incorporated into our products, they felt inspired to develop new ideas. It was exciting to think that this encounter could spark future projects that go beyond traditional craftsmanship, said Salar Bicheranloo, Co-founder and Creative Director of THEMOIRè.
The capsule’s techniques stem from local artisanal experimentation, such as a tie-dye method using porridge waste, inspired by Uganda’s natural colors and applied to the body of some of THEMOIRè’s most iconic shapes. Paper was also used and transformed into decorative elements like handles and appliqués.
The collaboration extended beyond product creation: local photographers and videomakers Andrew Kartende and Joel Mwesigwa documented the project through their own lenses, fostering an authentic and shared narrative.
With this fourth chapter, THEMOIRè reaffirms its vision of fashion as a dialogue between cultures — one that respects people and their territories and transcends the product itself.
Previously, sales from TOGETHER by THEMOIRè capsule collections contributed to the construction of clean water facilities for six rural schools in Chiapas (Mexico) and supported an orphanage in Antananarivo (Madagascar). Each experience has enriched the journey, proving that fashion can also be a powerful tool for positive and tangible impact.
In 2024, THEMOIRè and the TOGETHER by THEMOIRè project were among the three finalists for the CNMI Sustainable Fashion Awards in the SFA Human Capital and Social Impact Award category.
Our community gathered for the opening of the exhibition held in Milan on 20th September, during Milan Fashion Week, to celebrate together the capsule collection and the journey to Gulu.
Thank you all for coming, here some glimpses of the night!
